How Often Are Porta Potties Serviced?

Porta potties on job sites and long-term rentals are serviced once a week. Each visit includes pumping the tank, cleaning, sanitizing and restocking paper and sanitizer. Busy sites can add a second weekly visit. Event units arrive clean and stocked, and they are not serviced mid-event unless you add a service visit.
How often a unit gets serviced decides how clean it stays. Here is what happens on each visit and how to tell when your site needs more.
How often are construction porta potties serviced?
Construction porta potties are serviced once a week, and that weekly service is included in each 28-day billing cycle. As a rule of thumb, one standard unit serves about 10 workers on a 40-hour week with weekly service. Larger crews need more units or twice-weekly service.
The rental renews every 28 days until you call or text for pickup. There is no long-term contract. See construction porta potty rental and monthly porta potty rental for details.
What happens during a porta potty service visit?
A porta potty service visit follows the same 4 steps each week. The technician pumps the tank, cleans the inside, sanitizes the surfaces and restocks toilet paper and hand sanitizer. The driver also checks the door latch. The whole visit takes a few minutes per unit, and you do not need to be on site.
- Pump: the holding tank is emptied into the service truck.
- Clean: the seat, urinal, floor and walls are washed down.
- Sanitize: high-touch spots like the door handle and latch are sanitized.
- Restock: toilet paper and hand sanitizer are refilled.
If you rent a hand-wash station, ask to have water, soap and towels refilled on the same visit.
When should you choose twice-weekly service?
Twice-weekly porta potty service makes sense when a unit fills faster than one visit a week can handle. Choose it for crews over about 10 people per unit, for sites working long days or Saturdays, and for summer heat. Twice-weekly service is available on request at any time during the rental.
| Workers on site (40-hour week) | Suggested setup |
|---|---|
| 1 to 10 | 1 standard unit, weekly service |
| 11 to 20 | 2 units weekly, or 1 unit twice weekly |
| 21 to 40 | Check OSHA counts; add units and a urinal |
| 40+ | Plan by OSHA Table D-1 plus service schedule |
OSHA sets the minimum number of toilets on construction sites in 29 CFR 1926.51. Our OSHA porta potty requirements guide explains the table.

Are event porta potties serviced during the event?
Event porta potties arrive cleaned, sanitized and stocked with toilet paper and hand sanitizer. One flat price covers 1 to 5 days. Event units are not serviced mid-event unless you add a service visit. Large or multi-day events, like a 3-day festival, should book a mid-event service visit ahead of time.
Most one-day parties need no extra service if the unit count is right. Use the porta potty calculator guide and see event porta potty rental for multi-day planning.
What are the signs you need more service?
A porta potty needs more service when the tank is near full before the next visit, paper runs out, or odor gets strong between visits. These signs mean the unit is getting more use than one weekly visit can cover. Add a second visit or another unit before the problem grows.
- Waste is visible near the top of the tank before service day.
- Toilet paper or sanitizer runs out midweek.
- Odor is strong a few days after service.
- Workers start using a neighbor's or the client's bathroom.
- The crew grew, or the site added Saturday shifts.
How do you keep service on schedule?
Keeping porta potty service on schedule means keeping the unit reachable by the service truck. Keep a clear path, keep gates unlocked or share the code, and keep dumpsters and materials from blocking the door. If access will be blocked on service day, call ahead so the visit can be moved.

What happens when the rental ends?
When a long-term porta potty rental ends, call or text for pickup to stop billing. The rental renews every 28 days until you ask for pickup, and there is no long-term contract. On pickup day, the unit is pumped, loaded and taken back to the yard. You do not need to clean anything.
Plan pickup before the next 28-day cycle starts so you are not billed for another cycle. Give the date a few days ahead when you can.
Keep the path clear on pickup day, just like service day. If materials or a dumpster now block the unit, move them or tell the office before the truck comes.
